In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that Roadstone Provinces Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union explore a voluntary parting scheme to reduce staffing at the company’s Athlone plant. Pending agreement, it recommended that the two administrative clerks rotate one month on and one month off. The recommendation was signed on 10 February 1995. Roadstone Provinces Limited sought to make one of two clerical employees redundant, saying administrative costs could not be sustained and there was insufficient work for two full-time staff. The union said there was more work than the two clerks could complete in a normal working week, and that one clerk generated considerable business for the plant.
