WRC recommends €6,500 for worker in probation dispute

The WRC recommended that a worker receive €6,500 after finding merit in his dispute over probation and dismissal. Adjudication Officer Eileen Campbell dated the recommendation 22 September 2026. The worker said he had not received a clear warning that his job was at risk. The tool-hire employer said it had raised concerns about lateness, paperwork and following instructions, and had tried to coach him. Campbell accepted there were performance issues but found no structured probation process, no clear warning that the worker might fail probation and no right of appeal. She also found the 11-month probation term in the contract exceeded the six-month maximum, absent an applicable exception. The recommendation says the employer should revise its contracts and introduce a probation policy.
