WRC disallows Matus Buffa’s redundancy appeal after he refused transfer to Santry

The Workplace Relations Commission disallowed Matus Buffa’s appeal for a redundancy payment, finding his refusal of a transfer from Dundalk to Santry was unreasonable. The decision was dated 25 February 2026. Buffa said the transfer would mean a four-hour daily commute, compared with about 30 minutes from his previous home-to-work route. Brian Lattin T/A Bag City said it closed the Dundalk branch because it was unprofitable and offered staff alternative locations. The adjudication officer found that the commute did not make the Santry job unreasonable in the circumstances of the labour market. Under the Redundancy Payments Act, an employee may lose entitlement to a redundancy payment after unreasonably refusing suitable alternative employment. The complaint was not well founded.
