In 1995, the Labour Court found Waterford Crystal’s re-study of production work did not breach Clause 15:2 of the 1990 agreement, but said staff had not been adequately consulted about the need for it. The recommendation was signed on 21 December 1995. The dispute followed changes to a bonus scheme after a new washer-drier was installed at the company’s Butlerstown plant. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers Union argued that the revised scheme reduced one worker’s bonus even though the machine did not affect her work. It said standards were reduced by 9.3%, an estimated allowance was eliminated and a fixed value of 3.6% introduced. Waterford Crystal said the agreement allowed reviews after changes to equipment or working methods. The Court recommended full discussions with the workers concerned when studies are to be conducted.
