Labour Court backs dog warden's terms claim against Tipperary council

In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Tipperary (South Riding) County Council concede the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union's claim over a dog warden's employment terms. It said payments should follow the national agreement for the special award to local-authority employees outside Dublin. The recommendation was signed on 14 March 1994.

The Council took over the dog-warden service in April 1993 and offered to employ the existing warden on proposed terms. The union argued that the proposed pay would mean a substantial loss of earnings and that the role carried wide-ranging duties.

The Council said its proposed rates compared favourably with other local-authority roles and argued it was not obliged to employ the claimant. The Court considered the union's claim reasonable and recommended that it be conceded.
