In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that the C.I.E. Trade Union Group accept Iarnrod Eireann's colour-vision testing requirements for operative grades. It considered the requirements reasonable in view of railway safety and employment flexibility. The recommendation was signed on 10 March 1994.
The union argued that a general normal-colour-vision standard was too rigid for roles where colour vision was not needed and that other tests were available. The company said the standards supported safety and flexibility across its workforce.
