The Workplace Relations Commission has directed Affidea Diagnostics Ireland Limited to pay Shereen Gul €5,000 compensation after finding she was discriminated against on racial grounds during a visit to its Dundrum clinic. The decision was dated 18 August 2026.
Gul complained that staff subjected her to unusually demanding identity checks while she accompanied her mother for scans, and refused her request to help her mother in the changing area. Affidea denied discrimination, saying staff were verifying patient details under its procedures.
The adjudication officer found the identity questioning demeaning and disrespectful, and said Gul was unreasonably prevented from assisting her mother when an Irish patient in comparable circumstances had been allowed support. The WRC upheld the race discrimination complaint but rejected the allegation concerning the removal of her mother’s headscarf. Affidea was also directed to review its policies and provide staff diversity and inclusion training.
