Labour Court rejects cinema kiosk pay claim, recommends cashier interviews

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin Cinema Group Limited retain the locally agreed pay rate for popcorn kiosk staff at the Savoy cinema, rejecting the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s parity claim. On a separate cashier vacancy, it recommended a fresh interview process before an independent panel. The recommendation was signed on 30 May 1991. The Court found the company had not given the claimant proper notice of the vacancy and had avoided considering her until representations were made. It said she should receive equitable treatment with other applicants, but did not recommend confirming her in the post. The company and union also disputed whether the kiosk’s initially lower rate was temporary; the Court found the local rate agreement stood.
