In 1991, the Labour Court recommended against conceding a union claim for compensation for a maintenance craftsman’s lost overtime after Teagasc closed its Creagh Research Centre. The recommendation was signed on 29 May 1991. The worker had earned overtime locking up the farm and reading the weather station. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought compensation based on 2.5 times the annual loss, saying the overtime had been part of his working conditions. Teagasc said there was no guarantee of continued overtime and the transfer followed a rationalisation programme. The Court found no grounds, in the circumstances, to concede the claim.
