In 1991, the Labour Court recommended compensation for eight gallery attendants and cleaners who lost Sunday overtime while redeployed during refurbishment of the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art. It recommended payment of 15% of their lost earnings during redeployment. The recommendation was signed on 27 May 1991. The gallery closed from 18 March 1990 to 15 March 1991, and workers returned to their previous overtime basis after it reopened. The unions sought compensation, while Dublin Corporation argued the loss was temporary and did not justify payment. The parties were Dublin Corporation, the Irish Municipal Employer's Trade Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union.
