The Labour Court recommended that Garrett Ireland Limited contribute £10,000 to a sick pay scheme for about 200 workers at its Waterford plant. It signed the recommendation on 28 June 1991, following a claim by the National Engineering And Electrical Trade Union for a scheme funded by the company. The union sought a scheme at no cost to workers, while Garrett Ireland Limited opposed an open-ended non-contributory arrangement. The Court recommended amendments to benefit calculations and to the conditions under which benefits could be withheld after specified injuries. It also recommended accepting the union’s wording on abuse of the scheme. The Court recommended implementing the company’s scheme with those amendments, raising its contribution to £10,000 and introducing it on a trial basis for review after three years.
