In 1989, the Labour Court recommended a 39-hour working week for 83 workers at Stafford Miller (Ireland) Limited, with staggered meal breaks on shifts from 1 September. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union opposed linking the shorter week to changes in conditions including tea breaks and time off on church holidays. The Court also recommended ending the one-hour church-holiday break after the change took effect. It said discussions on the afternoon tea break and attendance and time-keeping bonus could continue separately. The recommendation was signed on 21 August 1989.
