In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Bus Eireann continue its existing system for rostering spare drivers in Dundalk for that season. The National Busworkers Union wanted seniority to determine how permanent and temporarily spare drivers were rostered. The dispute led to picketing at the Dundalk garage, which was suspended while the matter went through Labour Court procedures. The Court said Bus Eireann had not acted unreasonably and recommended that the parties discuss whether they could agree a change for the future. The recommendation was signed on 18 August 1989.
