In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Casings Limited and the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept negotiated terms on piece-rate targets and bonuses. The package included a target of 1,400 bundles a week and a rate of 8p per bundle. The recommendation was signed on 15 June 1989. The union sought a return to the previous system, arguing workers had to produce more to earn the same money. The company said its revised system had raised average weekly bonuses from £1.36 to £4.08. The Court said returning to the former standards was not feasible or desirable.
