In 1989, the Labour Court recommended immediate discussions between Carton Bros Limited and the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union on a restructured sick-pay scheme, to be introduced on 1 September. Carton Bros had temporarily withdrawn the scheme amid financial difficulties and concerns about abuse. The union opposed the withdrawal and said individual cases should be handled through established procedures. The recommendation was signed on 15 June 1989.
