In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a 5% increase in basic pay and a 2½% increase in applicable piece rates for workers at Dawn Meats (Carroll's Cross). The recommendation was signed on 18 July 1988 and covered 12 months from 1 January 1987, followed by the National Plan. The Irish Transport And General Worker's Union had sought a 10% increase, an extra day of annual leave, sickness benefit and a pension scheme. The Court did not recommend the annual-leave or sickness-benefit claims and noted that the company was costing a pension scheme. Dawn Meats cited competition, costs and reduced product volumes.
