In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a 3½% pay increase for 22 workers at Thomas Cook Limited, below the 5% sought by the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association. The recommendation was signed on 18 July 1988. The increase was to run for 12 months from 1 November 1987, followed by the National Plan. Thomas Cook had offered 2½%, alongside a separate one-off payment equal to 4% of annual salary through a profit-share scheme. The union argued that the Irish operation had made a profit and that a 5% rise matched increases elsewhere. The company pointed to its financial position and cost pressures.
