In 1987, the Labour Court recommended retaining Limerick Corporation’s net-pay method for calculating sick pay, excluding annual leave when assessing eligibility and setting up a joint review of the scheme in 1988. Its recommendation was signed on 13 May 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (Itgwu), which brought the claim for about 300 workers, sought wider changes to eligibility and benefits. Limerick Corporation said it had acted because of high absenteeism, pressure on essential services and financial constraints.
