In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that four workers at J. H. Roche & Sons Limited accept amended shift-work proposals, including new basic rates of £160 for a Mixer, £150 for a Cuber and £140 for each of two Packers. The recommendation was signed on 8 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had opposed the seasonal two-shift system, saying the proposed compensation did not replace workers’ overtime earnings. The Labour Court recommended acceptance of the conciliation proposals with revised rates. The recommendation did not specify that the proposed 25% shift premium was adopted.
