The Labour Court upheld Jerzy Wiecek’s six week notice award of €3,600 against O'SHEA & MURPHY BUILDING & CARPENTRY CONTRACTORS. The decision was dated 9 April 2024, after a hearing on 12 March. The employer appealed, saying it had to cease trading at short notice. It accepted that it had neither given Wiecek six weeks’ notice nor paid six weeks’ wages in lieu. Wiecek said he received neither notice nor payment. The parties did not dispute that he had worked for the employer from 15 October 2007 to 24 March 2022. The Court found the complaint well founded and ordered the employer to pay €3,600, equal to six weeks’ wages in lieu of notice. The six week entitlement applied to employees with at least 10 but less than 15 years of continuous service.
