The Labour Court said it would assess any future pay claim by the Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union against Bausch and Lomb in light of the circumstances then prevailing, including likely effects on investment, jobs and industrial relations. The recommendation was signed on 22 December 2010. The dispute concerned a proposed two-year pay freeze and compulsory redundancies at the company’s Waterford plant, which employed 1,050 people, including 75 union members. Bausch and Lomb said the freeze was needed to keep manufacturing costs competitive and protect jobs. The union opposed it and said production prospects were favourable.
