The Labour Court recommended that Maysteel Teoranta offer a once-off lump sum to the workers covered by the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union’s pay claim, with the amount to be discussed by the parties. The recommendation was signed on 12 April 2001. The union sought a 25% increase for operatives beyond the four who had received it in 1999. The Court said the company had caused the dispute, but the impact on competitiveness and employment did not justify conceding the claim. It also recommended assurances that future industrial relations negotiations use official channels and that company-union agreements be followed.
