In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Holmes, O'Malley, Sexton, Solicitors introduce a transparent pay review process with a right of appeal before its next review in April 1999. It also recommended retrospectively increasing a legal secretary’s pay in line with national pay agreements back to April 1987. The dispute was brought by Mandate on behalf of a legal secretary employed since 1980. The union sought to raise her salary from £12,324 to £15,000, saying she was paid less than colleagues and received smaller Christmas bonuses. The firm said pay reviews were merit-based and raised concerns about her performance. The Court recommended that the firm explain its expectations to her and give her an opportunity to meet them. The recommendation was dated 16 December 1998.
