In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Limerick Institute Of Technology increase the foreman/caretaker’s weekly differential to 12.5%, effective from 5 February 1997. It also recommended that the Institute examine his place on the salary scale to recognise his previous experience. The recommendation was dated 16 December 1998. The union, Manufacturing, Science, Finance, had sought a higher grade, arguing that the worker’s duties included supervisory and administrative responsibilities across the Institute. The Institute said he had accepted the caretaker scale and that his role did not require craft qualifications. The Court considered the existing scale appropriate for his grade but found the foreman differential was out of line.
