In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree to Galway Harbour Company’s proposed productivity measures in return for the claimed £16.04 pay increase for four full-time and two part-time general operatives. The Court also recommended that the company examine workers’ health concerns with a health and safety officer or environmental health inspector. The recommendation was dated 3 November 1997. The company sought changes including dock cleaning, credit transfer of wages, overtime sheets, greater flexibility and a time clock. The union objected in particular to dock cleaning, citing health and safety concerns.
