Labour Court recommends maintaining nurse ratio at Our Lady's Hospital acute unit

The Labour Court recommended maintaining the existing bed-to-nurse ratio in the acute unit at Our Lady's Hospital. The Southern Health Board said staffing levels were adequate, while the Psychiatric Nurses Association and Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that absences and special nursing duties left the unit short of staff. The Court recommended continuing management’s approach to special nursing while a committee worked on future policy, with both unions given an opportunity to comment before a final decision. It also urged nursing management to be sensitive to staff concerns when working below full complement. The recommendation was dated 23 June 1997.
