In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that proposed severance terms be accepted for 38 workers at Tuam Engineering. It did not recommend the unions’ claims for a share of asset-sale proceeds or restored pension benefits and notional service. The recommendation was signed on 23 January 1995. The unions were the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, Manufacturing Science Finance, Technical Engineering and Electrical Union, and Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union. Tuam Engineering said closure was inevitable after sustained losses; the unions sought improved severance and pension-related terms. The Court also recommended that the company seek arrangements allowing workers to convert a lump sum to a pension.
