In 1993, the Labour Court recommended a phased 3% pay increase under the PESP in return for SPS Unbrako Limited’s workplace proposals. The recommendation was dated 22 December 1993. The Technical Electrical Engineering Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union disputed conditions for applying the increase, including ending wash-up time and changing work practices. SPS Unbrako cited substantial losses and said it could not absorb extra costs. The Court said the increase could be justified only on a self-financing basis. It recommended accepting the company’s proposals, except that classification of set-up men as setter/operators should be negotiated under the comprehensive agreement.
