In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Steel Limited not concede the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for six extra annual leave days for four-shift rota workers. The recommendation was dated 8 February 1993. The union said additional leave was established practice for continuous shift work and pointed to the workers’ contribution to the company. Irish Steel Limited argued that four-shift working was temporary, the 12-hour rota provided more time off, and the company faced losses. After considering the shift arrangements, the company’s financial position, the industry and P.E.S.P., the Court found no compelling case for the claim.
