In 1993, the Labour Court found that G. & T. Crampton had unilaterally breached its agreement with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union by using painting subcontractors. The recommendation was dated 9 February 1993. The dispute followed the lay-off of three painters and the company’s subsequent subcontracting of painting work. The union said the 1985 agreement required consultation and agreement before subcontractors were engaged. G. & T. Crampton said subcontracting was more cost-effective and its competitors faced no similar restriction. The Court recommended that the company arrange with the union to comply with the agreement, and that any changes follow its consultation and agreement procedures.
