In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Airmount Maternity Hospital, Waterford resolve a dispute over nurses’ night-duty hours by crediting accrued time from 1 January 1990. The recommendation was dated 18 July 1991. The Irish Nurses Organisation said nurses worked 84 hours per fortnight but were paid for 80 and sought retrospective compensation. The hospital said nurses were present for 84 hours but meal breaks could mean they worked 77 to 80 hours.
