Labour Court recommends union accept Crown Berger’s no-compensation position

The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and Manufacturing Science and Finance accept Crown Berger Ireland Limited’s position that no compensation was due after industrial paint production ceased. The recommendation was signed on 18 July 1991. The unions argued that ending industrial paint manufacture was a fundamental change under the agreement and sought compensation. Crown Berger said the production process was uneconomic to upgrade for safety requirements, while increased decorative paint production had offset the closure. The Court noted that workers had lost neither income nor jobs, and recommended that the union accept the company’s position.
