In 1990, the Labour Court recommended accepting Waterford Corporation’s proposal to reduce hours for full-time firemen on day cover by eliminating overlap between shifts. The recommendation was signed on 5 November 1990. If a similar arrangement could not be made for night duty, the Court recommended that the Corporation provide the hours reduction as leave days. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought to accumulate the reduced hours as leave, while the Corporation proposed changes to shift overlap and finishing times.
