Labour Court rejects four Irish Rail union claims on compensation and crossing cover

By Cathal Brosnan

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The Labour Court did not recommend conceding four claims by the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union involving Irish Rail (Waterford Area), in a recommendation signed on 29 August 1989. The claims sought compensation for locomotive drivers, yard depot persons and loading guards, and extra staffing at two level crossings. The Court said the drivers’ claim was unsustainable because conceding it would undermine training arrangements. It did not recommend conceding the yard depot persons’ claim because their loss followed a loss of business, or the guards’ claim because the circumstances were outside the company’s control. It said the existing Family Allowance provided cover at the crossings and did not recommend conceding the union’s staffing claim.
