The Labour Court recommended that Macroom Dairies Limited and the Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union meet in January to review a wage-increase claim for 20 workers in light of the company’s finances. The recommendation was signed on 16 August 1988. The union sought a 27th wage-round increase of 5% plus £1.50 at the top of the scale, phased over 15 months. It said workers had accepted a pay pause in the previous round and that their rates were low compared with the trade. Macroom Dairies said trading difficulties and plans to restructure meant it could not afford increases in the short to medium term. The Court recommended a later review of the claim based on the company’s financial position at that time.
