In 1988, the Labour Court considered Bus Eireann's proposed change to working arrangements on its Galway–Dublin cross-channel services not unreasonable and did not recommend conceding the unions' claim. The recommendation was signed on 3 June 1988. Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and National Busworkers' Union opposed a plan that would rotate Wednesday rest days and affect Sunday rest. They argued that Sunday rest mattered to drivers who stayed overnight in Dublin. Bus Eireann said the new arrangement was more economical and would help with Sunday rostering.
