The Labour Court recommended that Sligo Vocational Educational Committee offer three caretakers time off in lieu at appropriate premium rates for Saturday work, provided this did not add related costs. It also recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept the offer. The dispute followed the elimination of Saturday overtime from September 1987, after which caretakers were rostered to work Saturdays. The union sought continued overtime pay or premium-rate time off in lieu, arguing Saturday work had long been treated as overtime. The Committee cited cash limits and the caretakers' conditions of appointment. The Department of Education and Department of Finance were also listed as parties. The Court said the Committee's financial constraints and its measures to address them were the overriding reality in the case. The recommendation was signed on 3 March 1988.
