In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that nine workers at Heiton McFerran Limited's Waterford branch handle fertiliser without additional compensation. The recommendation was signed on 4 November 1987. The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union sought a 10% increase in basic pay for handling the new products, arguing fertiliser was a new departure for the depot. Heiton McFerran said its agreement covered products stocked or sold in the future and that it needed flexibility to manage its business. The Court found that handling the new products fell within existing agreements and recommended that workers do the work without extra compensation.
