In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union's annual-leave claim against Aughinish Alumina Limited. The claim covered 100 production operators and sought to allow two workers per shift team off at once during summer. The recommendation was signed on 20 February. The union said the change would give workers a better chance to take summer leave with their families. The company said leave had to be spread to meet production needs and estimated the request would cost more than £50,000 for July and August.
