In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 12-week trial of flexible working hours in Cie's Galway offices, with a minimum 30-minute lunch break. The recommendation was signed on 10 February 1987. The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (T.S.S.A.) sought the arrangement, saying flexible hours operated in other Cie offices and that a half-hour break was suffiCient. Cie raised concerns about staffing, public service and operational needs. The Court said that if difficulties arose during the trial, Cie could require a longer minimum break or other measures to maintain public service and office effiCiency.
