Labour Court rejects worker’s appeal over redundancy discrimination

The Labour Court rejected a worker’s appeal alleging marital-status discrimination in her selection for redundancy at Beale Sheffield And Company. The decision was signed on 20 December 1988. The worker said she had longer service and more experience than a single colleague who was retained, and alleged that a company partner referred to her husband being able to support her. The company said reduced trading led it to cut staff and that the worker was let go because she was the last hired and worked part-time on a temporary basis. The Court was not satisfied that discrimination under the Employment Equality Act, 1977, had been established, and rejected the unfair-dismissal appeal.
