The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Ian Kavanagh €4,000 after finding he was unfairly dismissed from his job at Southern Cross Taverns t/a The Promenade Bar And Grill. The decision, by Adjudication Officer Penelope McGrath, was dated 11 September 2025.
Kavanagh’s employer said the dismissal was for financial reasons. The adjudicator accepted that the business needed to reduce costs and that a genuine redundancy situation existed, but found the selection process unreasonable: Kavanagh had no warning or opportunity to consider alternatives, and the employer later hired staff, including an assistant bar manager. The award covered four weeks of financial loss.
