WRC awards driver €1,500, €250 and €100 on employment complaints

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded driver Vedran Ajdin €1,500, €250 and €100 on three complaints against Portway Trailers Limited. The decision was dated 16 September 2024. The WRC also ordered the company to comply with the requirement to notify mobile workers of applicable regulations.

Ajdin worked for the company from 27 March to 3 May 2024 at €16 an hour. He said he repeatedly requested a written employment contract; the company accepted it had not provided one, and the officer rejected the authenticity of a contract later produced. The WRC ordered €1,500 for that breach and €100 for the absence of written core terms. It ordered €250 after finding the company had failed to notify him of the applicable road transport regulations.

Three other complaints were not well founded. The officer preferred the company’s evidence on the working-hours records complaint. Complaints about a reasoned reply to a request for more predictable work and an alleged probation term were also not well founded.
