Dublin Car Care Limited was ordered to pay former employee Jennifer Byrne €3,322.48 gross in notice pay after the car valeting business ceased trading. The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), in a decision dated 29 February 2024, also found Byrne entitled to a statutory redundancy lump sum, subject to her having been in insurable employment during the relevant period.

Byrne worked in general administration for 21 years, from January 2002 until March 2023, for 35 hours a week at gross weekly pay of €415.31. She said she received no notice when her employment ended. The company did not attend the hearing, which proceeded after it had been properly served.

The WRC found the redundancy claim well founded because the business and Byrne’s work had ceased. It said the lump sum calculation was a matter for the relevant department, with weekly pay subject to a €600 ceiling. For the separate notice entitlement, the WRC directed the company to pay eight weeks’ gross pay, amounting to €3,322.48.
