The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Meegan Insulations Limited to pay Shane Farrell €600 for dismissing him without the required notice and €600 compensation for failing to provide written employment terms. In a decision dated 18 September 2023, it also ordered the company to repay €180 deducted for a Safe Pass course. Farrell worked as an insulation installer from February 2022 to February 2023. He said he was dismissed without notice, had not received written terms and had been charged for Safe Pass. The company denied dismissing him and said he left after a workplace dispute. The WRC found Farrell had been dismissed on 3 February 2023 and was owed minimum notice. It also found the company had not given him written terms and that the Safe Pass deduction was unauthorised. A duplicate Payment of Wages complaint was subsumed into the minimum notice claim. Farrell’s separate claim for unpaid overtime was not well founded; the adjudication officer accepted evidence that overtime had been paid.
