WRC rejects retired civil servant’s pay complaint against Revenue

The Workplace Relations Commission found a Payment of Wages complaint by retired civil servant Neil Cronin against The Revenue Commissioners not well founded. The decision, dated 18 December 2023, concerned his exclusion from a process to upgrade eligible Assistant Principals to a higher pay scale.

Cronin said he would have delayed his retirement if he had known about the process, which he believed could have increased his pension, retirement lump sum and backdated pay. Revenue argued that he had retired before the process began and had no automatic entitlement to an upgrade. The WRC found that remaining in service would only have made him eligible for an invitation to apply; any application would then have been assessed against criteria. It concluded that Cronin had not made out a claim under the Payment of Wages Act.
