The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Laois Leisure worker Nicholas Stancill €1,680 after finding he was penalised for making a protected disclosure. In a decision dated 15 December 2023, it also awarded him €200 for not receiving written terms of employment. The WRC found that a workplace health and safety grievance qualified as a protected disclosure and that Stancill was penalised after managers sought views on his performance.

Stancill also complained about withheld pay and rest breaks, but the WRC found those complaints not well founded. It said the withheld pay had been repaid, and Stancill confirmed he had not worked beyond statutory hours. Because he had found other work and suffered no financial loss, the officer limited compensation for penalisation to four weeks’ pay, calculated at €420 a week.
