The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ordered O'Shea & Murphy Building and Carpentry Contractors to pay plasterer Willie John Mariga €4,800 in lieu of eight weeks’ notice and €600 for accrued annual leave. The decision was dated 8 March 2024. It also found him entitled to a statutory redundancy payment, subject to his having been in insurable employment during the relevant period. Mariga said he had worked for the company from 1999 until it told him in March 2022 that there was no more work. The company agreed that redundancy was due, but said it had given notice and that Mariga had taken his holiday entitlement through January 2022. The WRC found the company’s note about insufficient work for a few weeks did not count as minimum notice. All three complaints were upheld.
