The Workplace Relations Commission found Anne Morris was unfairly dismissed by Limerick Chamber of Commerce and ordered it to pay her €17,420 compensation, about six months’ wages. The decision was dated 7 March 2023.
Morris had worked for the Chamber as a Network Manager since October 2004, on a 21-hour week. Her employment ended in September 2021. She said she had been unfairly dismissed; the Chamber argued that her part-time role had become redundant as it sought a full-time manager.
The WRC found demand for Morris’s work had increased, but concluded there was no genuine redundancy situation. It considered compensation appropriate rather than reinstatement or re-engagement. The award took account of the WRC’s finding that Morris’s efforts to find new work were not sufficiently rigorous, as well as eight weeks’ statutory notice pay when calculating her financial loss.
