The Workplace Relations Commission awarded former Ryanair employee Gary Howard €5,000 for unfair treatment in the process of his redundancy and €2,500 after finding the company unlawfully withheld his bonus. The WRC decision was dated 16 March 2023.

Howard, a flight Operations Officer based in Dublin, said Ryanair had unfairly selected him for redundancy and withheld his 2019/2020 bonus. Ryanair said the role was genuinely redundant during pandemic-related restructuring and denied making an unlawful deduction.

The WRC accepted that the position was legitimately made redundant and that the dismissal resulted wholly from redundancy. It found the selection process unfair because Ryanair did not give Howard full information about the selection process. It also found that his bonus had been earned for the prior year and that withholding it was an unlawful deduction.
